The Great TREK - #7

July the 7th -  our 2nd Leg

Had an early breakfast at the lodge in Kuruman in the Kalahari and decided to do a detour drive and visit the Witsand Kalahari Nature Reserve. The "Roaring" white sand dunes of Witsand (White Sand) are still today a mysterious natural phenomenon. These pale white dunes are believed to have emerged from an isolated rage of hillocks buried beneath the sand, from which springs a natural reservoir that, for over millions of years, has gradually leached the red-oxide from the dunes, turning them white.

Its a pretty good sight to be at due to the red/White contrasts.

To my dismay the road to the nature reserve is all graveled, all 75km of it. So it took us 3,5 hours before reaching the reception gate of the nature reserve. We had to rush the visit as we were supposed to meet my sister in Upington for a quick lunch as she was coming from Johannesburg to the Fish River for a week's long river rafting. Little did we know that the road was so bad (Poor VW Polo, took a beating) that we missed each other.

Anyway, another 2 hours of this gravel road (45km through another way via Globershoop) before finally getting on the national road (N10) again on our way to Augrabies via Upington.

Finally arrived at our 2nd leg destination at 16h00, just in time for us to quickly unpack the car and go for a quick 2 hour sunset hike in Augrabies National Falls.

Simply beautiful place.

This piece of road was the best

We had to climb 35 metres (very hard work indeed) to get to the top of the dune
